Boating the water wonderlands of South Puget Sound

It's the most blissful part of summer: late enough in the season for warm days but with crisp mornings that make hot coffee the best discovery ever. I'm perched in the cockpit of my 32-foot sailboat, its bow line tied to a state-park buoy, with Mount Rainier filling the horizon like John Goodman fills a TV screen. As the sun rises the moorage is perfectly quiet, with just two other sailboats in Delano Bay.

Victoria Hoff: I tried walking 10,000 steps every day for a week, here's what happened

Much like the traffic and spectacular array of dietary restrictions among its citizens, the fact that no one walks in Los Angeles was one of the oft-mentioned maxims that preceded my moving here two years ago. I didn't realize how true it was until my first full day in Byrdie's L.A. headquarters. In celebration of my arrival, our team went out for lunch. We piled into a series of Ubers... only to hop out at our destination two blocks down the road. Fresh off the plane from a car-free five years in New York City, I was scandalized.

At 72, he became a personal trainer to help other seniors stay fit

Ted Hart spent his career in information technology, retiring from IBM in 2006. But once he and his wife, Bobbi, moved to a senior adult community in Frisco, Texas, he realized he wasn't finished working. How could this longtime sports and fitness enthusiast turn a blind eye to reports that 80 percent of senior citizens don't adhere to a regular fitness program? And that many chronic diseases they have were preventable through staying fit?

Nike running shoe might be what you need for your next marathon

Even if you aren't a hard-core runner, you probably heard about Nike's attempt this spring to create the perfect conditions to break two hours in the marathon. (Eliud Kipchoge gave it a valiant effort, but he came up a bit short, running it in two hours and 25 seconds). The event was part science experiment and part PR stunt, highlighting Nike's new shoe, the Zoom Vaporfly 4 percent, which is designed to give runners a 4 percent improvement in running economy. While that shoe is available (at $250) for elite runners, the vast majority of runners will be better suited in the Nike Zoom Fly, a shoe designed to be durable enough for training yet retain many of Nike's technology used in creating the elite shoe.

Beginners welcome: A HIIT workout plan for first-timers

We're often going on about the benefits of getting out of your workout comfort zone. While the idea sounds great on paper, it isn't always so easy in practice. Trying out a new class can be a bit daunting – you're exposing yourself and your body to something entirely new, not to mention just showing up can be quite intimidating. One particular workout that's gained something of a cult following but whose name alone is enough to make beginners wary is HIIT – or high-intensity interval training.

Timex Ironman GPS is a simple, affordable, multisport watch

There was a time in the not too distant past when if you looked around the start of a running race, you would see Timex Ironman watches on wrists everywhere. Then came the GPS revolution, and tech-savvy runners had a lot more choices. Timex has had GPS-enabled watches before, but they never caught on like other major names in the field. That may change with the newest iteration of the Timex Ironman GPS released this summer, which fills an underserved niche right now – a simple, affordable GPS watch with all the tracking a multisport athlete could want.
